Caravan Park Millionaire
CARAVAN park resident Val Howarth became an instant millionaire yesterday after the hammer fell on her Kingsford home for $1.06 million.
The 74-year-old pensioner, who inherited the property in January when her mother passed away, celebrated her windfall with a $6 bottle of sparkling wine and surrounded by friends.
Ms Howarth was beside herself. "You little beauty!" she screamed when told the price.
"I'm having trouble talking and the champagne's flowing. That fleeting moment of being a millionaire is quite exciting."
The Pardey St house, which sold in the now up-and-coming suburb of Kingsford, was bought by Ms Howarth's mother Isabel May for just £990 in 1943.
But thanks to the power of increasing property values the former secretary and bread deliverer reaped 1000 times that amount after a heated auction.
What's more, Ms Howarth has no plans other than to buy a sparkling new demountable home to replace her caravan, a modest new car and donate to the local hospital where she is being treated for bone cancer.
"I wouldn't leave here for a million dollars," Ms Howarth said.
"It was so popular because it's an absolute blank canvas - an untouched house on a popular street on a good, level 408sq m block," said selling agent Corrine Hughes from PRD Nationwide.
The new owners are a young couple with two-year-old twins.
"I'd thought maybe the house would be worth something like half a million dollars, although a friend was saying recently that it could be worth double that," Ms Howarth said.
"But I still in my heart didn't believe it."
Ms Howarth's mother bought the house after her husband's employer handed the family a lump sum after he was killed in World War II.Click to expand...
