澳洲Australia property DIY Flea control | Sydney

在澳大利亚 The pool at of an IP needs to be resurfaced (or so the pool doctor says), the cost was estimated to be $10K ($10,000), after recoverying from my impresssion of a cat coughing up a fur ball, it just seems far too much. Its just a standard poo I need some advice regarding a property purchase. Property - semi-detached house Bedrooms - 2 Condition - average needs internal reno to modernise Street - one of the best in suburb Location - excellent Close to schools - yes Transport - 50m

Hi All,

Im going to start work on my IP on Wednesday morning.

I will be doing the painting, then I have a tradesman ripping the carpets and sanding / polishing floors.

The carpets are really badly infested with fleas. Before the carpets get pulled up, I will be spending quite a bit of time in the property preparing the walls and skirting as well as doing the first coat of paint.

Are you guys aware of any DIY flee control kits which I can use to get rid of the flees or atleast make things more bearable while I’m working in the property?

The fleas literally cover my legs when I’m standing on the carpets, so perhaps there is something i can treat the property with before i start my work. I know it might take a few days, weeks months before all the fleas die off, but I’m looking for ‘quick’ fix which will temporally make my time in the property more pleasant.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
Robbie

Flea bomb it before you start. That will take care of most of them. Bomb it again once carpet is removed to kill any new fleas that have hatched due to movement when carpets are pulled up.

Thanks, I also came across the Mortein Flea Bomb, but I wasnt sure how well it would work and if you help with a 'quick fix' to the problem.

What I might just do is use the flea bomb before i start the work, then get the pest control guys to spray the property thoroughly afterwards.

The guy who did my pest inspection mentioned there was a cockroach infestation in the roof, so I will get him to sort that out as well as a respray to sort out the fleas once the carpets are removed.

Friend's used the mortein one and says it is quite effective. He said something about you need to vaccum straight after you can safely go back in.

This is completely wrong I've been told by my cat's vet. Do not vaccuum. The growth inhibitor needs to stay on and in the carpet to break the flea growth cycle.

Flea bombs really do work, you might be surprised at what else they kill

Great, I'll give the flea bombs a try. Hopefully a few cans of the stuff will stop those little critters from eating me alive while I'm painting :)

sThe one at Coles/Woolworths usually come in a three pack so buy a couple of packs then get home and close the house up and put one in every room and then lock the house and go out for a few hours. When you come back just open the house and air it a bit before you start work. Also a good idea to leave all the cupboard doors and drawers open so the fumes get in and kill everything. You can get cockroach or flea bombs but from my experience they both do the same/similar job but if you care just get the one with the most active ingredient.

Do mine every year just to keep on top of the cockys and fleas and happy to spend the $20 doing it on the cheap.

Do It TWICE

Dear Robbie
the eggs hatch after 2 weeks
You exterminate one generation, but the ones who jump on you are the next generation looking for a 'feed'
The eggs don't get killed by the spray..... they have to be 'alive and jumping as the spray cant penetrate the egg shell.. eurghhh

wait a 2 week interval even if you cant see anything...
spend the extra $20, do it twice
It will be worth every cent....
cheers

Hey All,

I tried the Mortein flea bombs and they worked REALLY well!

I literally put 4 of them in the house, on Wednesday morning, then came back to the property 3 days later.

I also ripped out all the carpets and didnt see a single flee while i worked on the property for 3 days.

I'm not sure if I will do a round 2.

What i was told about in the pest inspection report was of a cockroach infestation in the roof, so what I might do is put 2 Mortein control bombs in the roof, just at the entrance of the trapdoor, which will hopefully sort them out.

Cheers,
Robbie

Ensure you turn off power before doing this, as theres lots of electrical wires in the ceiling, and the bomb vapour is flammable.

Maybe get some lime and throw around in the grass as well and that will kill any fleas in the yard and then they won't get brought in the house

Thanks Dave, good advice!

Willb, when you say throw lime in the grass, do you literally mean throw chopped up pieces of the citrus fruit (lime)?

NO, lime as in the white powder (previously used in motar for brickwork).

DOH! My bad! I will get some over the weekend from Bunnings

From: http://www.ehow.com/about_4598439_will-hydrated-lime-kill-fleas.html

Normal lime (garden lime), as opposed to hydrated or dry lime, is a better option for killing fleas (and not harming your animal, while at it). Garden lime will suffocate both the fleas as well as their eggs.Click to expand...

If you dont do round 2, you will have just wasted your money... and SS said in their post, you need to do it twice to kill off the second generation of fleas, that didnt get killed by the first bombs.
Same approach to managing nits/ lice.. you always need to do a second treatment a week or two later.
