I'd like to call on the experience of others regarding applying to council for alterations.
I will be buying a house soon to renovate and want to know when is the earliest time I can apply to do alterations.
Is it after settlement or can I apply before?

You can apply at any time...the trick is that many councils require the OWNER of the property to sign things...so before settlement you may need to get the vendor to sign some stuff.
However check with the local council, all of them have different regs & all of them should be able to tell you about any limitations in this area.
BTW - we always check with the council BEFORE exchanging, it's not worth taking the risk of the property not being alterable

It would be a problem if you had great plans for a property only to find out that there are severe restrictions after you have bought it.
