Seeking Good builder in Canberra
We're about to start our latest reno in Canberra & I'm trying to locate a good builder for the project.
Our usual contact has moved onto some bigger developments & isn't available.
- Changed the thread title so it sez what I mean
The problem you'll find at the moment is that all builders in Canberra are experiencing unprecidented demand - it doesn't matter whether they are good or otherwise. The reasons are obvious; low interest rates continue and the demand for new homes continues, there are literally thousands of town houses and units under construction and in the pipeline, and the fires have meant that some 600 homes are to be rebuilt and many more partially rebuilt.
Builders are coming out of retirement and from interstate to benefit from this demand. Prices have risen 20% at least since the fires.
Sorry to be a wet blanket but good luck! Try the MBA / HIA for a recommended list of near graduating apprentices or those just starting out. These will be your best bet as they are still keen and trying to make their mark - the down side is that will require more guidance and input from you.
Try your "usual contact" for a 'mate' in the 'game', if you haven't already.
Thanks for the comments.
We're aware of the frantic nature of the industry in Can at the moment, that's why we're currently building a list of builders for this job (and future work), not just relying on our usual contacts.
New builders is a good idea - we could do the work ourselves, but prefer not to get licensed at this stage, so guidance is no problem
We still have some time up our sleeve to hunt for someone, and I may draw on contacts outside of the ACT myself if we have to - would prefer not though, it's only a small job in building terms.
