Hi, I'm a long time reader but recent poster in somersoft. The information i read here have been invaluable. Been learning a lot. I'm still amaze on how generous people could be with their time and expertise.
The reason for my thread is that I'm currently doing research on mining/resource towns in nsw. I've been scouring the internet and trying to find a list of suburbs/towns that can be considered as mining towns, or at least a big component of their economy is mining. so far, i've found the following:
hunter (e.g. muswellbrook, newcastle, maitland, scone, cessnock, etc)
orange
dubbo
broken hill
parkes
wollongong
cowra

I'm wondering if anyone has a more comprehensive list, or could add to the list above, or maybe point me to the direction on where i could get more information. Thanks in advance.

Go to the websites of the various mining companies for a comprehensive list of individual mines and the areas they're in.

Not quite what you're after, but I think this tool is quite useful for identifying where the mines themselves are.

Orange - you might have missed the boat here
Wollongong - look further south as the main city of Wollongong is dying

The only iron mine in NSW as far I'm aware is close to Wellington & Gulgong.

Muswellbrook is good for black coal.

As far as mining goes I'd prefer investing in coal and iron areas.

Thoughts?

Why coal and iron ore? These are 'lower class' (excuse the term but I can not think of an alternative term) commodities which are good for building cities in china with but will not experience that much growth as China matures. Commodities like copper etc are tipped to be the next big thing.

Straits has a copper mine in NSW....

That's my opinion and not necessarily right. As always dyor.

The demand for coal and iron from China, India and Brazil was my thinking. Yes lower grade but as far as gross exports they're both substantial when compared with other metalliferous exports, and safe to bank on too no?

I'm only putting it out there - investing/speculating in mining towns is not my forte.

Yes, however I see large amounts of supply coming on the market soon with iron ore, and the coal price is already sinking fast. Brazil has it's own iron ore, and I doubt we export any to them. Brazil iron ore is produced at a much higher cost than what we produce at, mainly because they have to pelletize it. It sells for more, however the profit margin is lower. In addition their shipping rates are higher to Asia. On the flip side, that helps australian iron ore producers.

It isn't my forte either, but happy to discuss and learn.

asulatur, may have missed the boat in Mudgee, Gulgong as well, .... prices have shot up and strong competition for any new listings ... I was thinking about buying and took a trip up there to see for myself, but I just had the feeling it had had it's initial upward run and it's due for a breather.

Nothing worse than buying at the top of the feeding frenzy .... Anyway, .. I'm probably wrong, but comfortable with my decision.

Whats with Narromine

Spoke to our agent in Narromine today who informed me that he'd just had his best sales month ever! A few people have commented on Dubbo in the past and from a couple of months ago Nymagee was listed in The Australian Property Investors magazine as the best performing suburb. I think this may have come on the back of recent Gold Mine announcements. Not sure if it's to late but might be worth looking at.

Cheers Bullfrog.

Yes I do have property in Narromine and no it's not for sale

what about bathurst or hunter region

thanks for the replies. what about bathurst or the hunter region e.g. muswellbrook, cessnock, kurri kurri, singleton? any thoughts? are they now overprice? thanks.

imo yes as a whole they are now overvalued in Hunter. Relative value better in Newcastle. Better value altogether elsewhere (regional towns NSW)

asulatur,
Another way to find mining areas as well as active mining companies in Australia is to use Google News Australia (or you could even use Google Alerts if you want regular updates), and look for keywords like "mine" or "mining", and you'll find recent press releases and major activities of mining companies in Australia

Interesting. The agents in Dubbo have been complaining about a lack of listings.

Continue the Hunter line over the Great Dividing Range into the NW Slopes and Plains.
New coal mines opened and a few still yet to open up in the early planning stages.

From Quirindi, Werris Creek, Gunnedah, Boggabri.

Lots of opposition to them from farmers but plenty of speculation to go with the already numerous 72 carriage trains of coal heading to Newcastle 'round the clock each and every day.

China/India wont be build in a day....

Of note from what Im seeing is the Latrobe Valley in VIC.

With the largest source of brown coal in the world and clean coal technology coming on line and the VIC govt announcing a possible "pilbara" in VIC....strikes me as something worth a look.

An Antimony mine is to be re-opened about 40kms east of Armidale around the end of the year as well.
