Plaza Iberoamericana

This plaza commemorating the bicentennial of European settlement in Australia was inspired by the contribution of Spanish and Portuguese speaking people to the discovery and settlement of Australia.

Portuguese and Spanish sailors contributed greatly to the exploration of the South Pacific and knowledge from their voyages assisted the eventual settlement of Australia in 1788.

The Plaza was officially opened on the 4th Feb, 1989.

Royal Exhibition Hotel

Recently refurbished.

The Reschs family established this pub in 1910 to cater for the hordes drawn by the Royal Exhibition held there in 1910. Allegedly built over the tank stream.

Cleveland House---an White Elephant?
Some say it is the oldest house still standing in Sydney, perhaps even older than Cadman’s Cottage in The Rocks. It was built by Captain Cleveland, an officer of the 73rd regiment. Some say it was designed by Francis Greenway but it is not proven. It is so sad Cleveland House (in private hands) is in such poor condition, unlike Cadman’s Cottage.

Quaker Meeting House
The Quakers meet here each Sunday morning.
The first Quaker to visit Australia was on the boat with Captain Cook in 1770. Now there are around 1000 members and many more attenders in Australia. Quakers regard all life as sacramental, and respect all persons equally, they think of religion as inseparable from everyday living.

GREENS SENATOR KERRY NETTLE
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Kerry Nettle was elected as the first Greens Senator for NSW in 2001.
Since then Kerry has been a progressive voice in the Parliament and in the community on a range of issues. Kerry has played a leading role in the peace movement in Australia by speaking out against the invasion of Iraq and working with local communities to express their opposition to the war. Along with Bob Brown, Kerry confronted George W. Bush in the Australian Parliament in October 2003 about the treatment of the two Australians being held in Guantanamo Bay.
Kerry has also been a leading voice in calling for the government to treat asylum seekers with compassion and humanity. Kerry has been at the forefront of exposing this government's cruel treatment of asylum seekers with cases like Cornelia Rau and Vivian Solon.
Kerry has also been a vocal advocate for public education and the reproductive rights of women.
Kerry has an Environmental Science degree. After university she lived in Kakadu National Park working with the Traditional Owners of the land to successfully stop the Jabiluka Uranium Mine being built. She also spent time living in East Timor teaching English to Timorese women and she was a youth worker in a multicultural community centre in Western Sydney.

ACTORS CENTRE AUSTRALIA
In 1986, two actors had a vision: to establish Sydney's only centre dedicated to ongoing training for professionals. With an 1880 heritage-listed church providing the venue, on the morning of June 27th 1987, the doors officially opened.
The enormous demand from both the artistic and general community inspired the Centre to expand its charter since that time. The opportunity to work with like-minded, passionate artists has drawn thousands of people from all over Australia and around the world over the last 20 years. Our aim was always to create a facility of excellence, giving access to the industry's best teachers and artists. ACA's RAP program has travelled to Brisbane, Melbourne and New Zealand as well as London (1999), Nice, France (2000) and Brazil (2001).
From international theatre and film directors, to master teachers and renowned and respected actors - Gale Edwards, Jeremy Sims, Jane Campion, Nick Enright, John Bell, Richard Wherrett, Rowena Balos, Zoe Carides, Phillip Quast, Nancy Hayes, Judi Conelli, Meryl Tankard and many others.

Trinity Bar, 505 Crown St (Cnr Devonshire)
The Trinity Bar (or maybe it should be the Trinity Hotel) is an Irish theme pub, without the theme, or so it seems. The Trinity takes its name from Trinity College in Dublin, where of course Sherlock Holmes studied.
The Trinity is an Irish pub, but one that I could like, as the Irish theme is not rubbed in your face (like so many others). The place has that relaxed feel about it. As you look at the pub from across the road, the first thing you notice is the outside balcony seating, which seems the most popular place to be, the sound of chatter and laughter as one enters a pub always sets a good tone to the place.
Once inside you are greeted with dark wooded floors and an "U" shaped bar backing onto the wall, Also this is of some dark wood (possibly cedar). One of the most striking looks to this pub is that one wall is a book shelf (see image below), on closer inspection though, the books are of little interest, mostly being of old legal style books.
On the other walls there are prints and poems by Yeats and Browning.
The Trinity also has an upstairs bar, and while I have been to this pub previously, I have never ventured upstairs. As we go up the stairs we notice that this is where all the "real Irish" stuff is: you know - the rugger guernsey's, the maps of Ireland etc. Upstairs you find a pool table and lounge and a second bar (not manned when we were there).
All in all, a good Irish pub that has not been overdone. If you are in the area I say "Check it out."

Frog Hollow Reserve

Overview
The City of Sydney has recently completed the second stage of the $1.3 million upgrade of Frog Hollow Reserve in Surry Hills.
The second stage of the upgrade has further improved access and provides a variety of spaces for public enjoyment. Works include a variety of ramps and steps, new shade trees and large informal grass areas. The park now provides a space for casual recreation as well as providing an improved pedestrian thoroughfare between Albion and Little Albion Street.
The park was officially opened by the Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP with a celebration on Saturday 24 February 2007.
Background
Frog Hollow Reserve is located on the corner of Albion and Riley Street in Surry Hills, up to 8m below the adjacent streets. Prior to the upgrade, poor accessibility and steep grades on many of the grassed areas limited the use of the park. Stage 1 of the upgrade was commenced by South Sydney Council and included the construction of a new street square on the corner of Albion and Riley Streets and a central staircase to provide access to the
reserve. The project was transferred to the City of Sydney as a result of the 2003 boundary changes.  Stage 1 was completed in September 2005. Construction of stage 2 commenced in June 2006 and was completed in February 2007.
