There are 15 winners in our awards, but the big winner is the consumer, who’s spoiled for choice this year.
There’s an adage about playing to your strengths, and each of the 15 winners in Australia’s Best Cars 2014 is a good example of what their respective maker does best.
Look at Mitsubishi, back in the winner’s circle for the first time in many years with its Mirage, which has won in a new class, Micro Cars. Mitsubishi’s smaller offerings, which also include Colt and Lancer, have been solid sellers for decades, and it’s no surprise that it’s put together the right package for such a price-sensitive class.
So it is for Renault, a winner in Light Cars with its frisky Clio. Buyers will spend to get fun and performance in something small, and French quirkiness fits the bill precisely.
Perhaps the best example of playing to your strength is the Best Medium Car under $50,000, Skoda Octavia. With the benefit of VW as its parent company, Skoda can load its vehicles with VW-sourced technology and components, but get them to the market at a cheaper price point. When your rivals in a very competitive class are $38,000-$40,000 and you’re selling for $30,000 drive-away, you’re hard to beat.
Another new category for ABC in 2014 is Best 2WD SUV under $35,000, and Qashaqi, a new release this year, gave Nissan its first ABC win for many years. Nissan has six SUVs on the market across a range of classes, so they know what they’re doing in what is still the fastest-growing vehicle style in Australia.
Many familiar nameplates populate the other classes: Subaru Forester, Hyundai Santa Fe and VW Touareg in the AWD categories, VW Golf GTI and an AMG-enhanced Mercedes in the sports car classes, and Holden Commodore as Best Large Car.
But the standout vehicle for 2014 – the one given the accolade of Judges’ Choice – is a car acknowledged as perhaps the most important in its maker’s stable: Mercedes-Benz C200.
Customer expectation is high for the C-Class, as it’s many motorists’ first entry into a prestige vehicle.
C200 is a quality car. It’s very safe, fuel-efficient and superb to drive, has equipment and technology that are normally optional and for a luxury vehicle is competitively priced.
