It may not be a run-of-the-mill car recall, but it could easily impact more consumers than many recalls that have come before it: Dorel Australia Pty Ltd is recalling more than 10,000 child seats, the majority of which are the Maxi-Cosi A2 Euro Convertible Car Seats.
That massive figure is being reported by the ABC, but the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s recalls website states no exact number.
According to the ABC, there are about 6000 A2 versions involved in the recall, but the company had already removed 5000 units of the A4 version last week due to that seat being “distributed without having its safety standard certification, meaning it was effectively being sold illegally”.
What is clear is that the model affected by the notice on recalls site is the ISOFIX-compatible Euro A2 manufactured between 16 September 2014 and 12 March 2015.
According to the official notice: “In some instances, the fabric around the harness adjuster mechanism may get caught in the mechanism, allowing the shoulder harnesses to loosen without lifting the harness adjuster.”
Further, the potential hazards involved with these seats, should the fault occur: “If the harness is loosened the child restraint is no longer effective in restraining the child in the event of an accident or sudden braking, increasing the risk of injury to the child.”
The seats were available through numerous major retailers, such as Baby Bunting, Bubs Baby Shops, My Baby Warehouse, Toys ‘R’ Us, and other independent stores Australia-wide.
Customers are advised to check if their seat is built between the above-mentioned dates, and the company that supplies the seats, Dorel Australia Pty Ltd, will offer a “free replacement trim for affected car seats”. For further information on identifying the date of manufacture please visit www.maxi-cosi.com.au.
In the meantime, customers are advised to “ensure that the harness adjuster is free of any impediments when fitting a child into the restraint”.

The ABC states that Maxi-Cosi child seats are sold in more than 80 countries, and there are more than 250,000 car seats sold every year in Australia.
