I haven't used a sponge mop in a while, (like 20 years) but a microfibre pad time mop works fine to clean a timber floor, so does one of those ones made with lots of flat strips of fabric, as long as you don't use it too wet.

We have extensive tiles in our kitchen and dining area and every 3 or 4 years we give them a liberal application of Napisan – ½ cup to 2 litres of boiling water and tip it over the tiles – each bucket will cover about 10sqm after about 10 minutes start mopping it around and you will find all the dirt comes out of the grout and the tiles – makes chalk and cheese difference with ours
