7号台新闻：Monash大学获得7600万澳元医学研究拨款
位于墨尔本的Monash大学，获得了联邦政府总医学研究基金五亿拨款的大部分。
联邦政府的医学研究拨款总数是5.26亿澳元，全国有682个不同的医学研究机构获得了联邦政府的拨款。
其中，Monash大学获得了最大笔的拨款，将近7600万澳元。
而联邦卫生部长Greg Hunt 周三也亲自来到Monash大学，对他们公布了这一拨款好消息。
联邦政府给Monash大学的拨款，包括用于心血管疾病研究的资助和研究致命的真菌感染。
Monash大学的Sophia Zoungas教授和她的团队将领导一项试验，以了解降胆固醇药物是否可以减少老年人心血管病意外。
580万澳元的拨款将用于继续2015年开始的一项研究试验，研究他汀类药物（statins）是否可以帮助70岁或以上的老人减少胆固醇，帮助他们延长寿命。
目前在全澳，大约有40％的65岁或以上的澳洲人有心血管疾病病史的人，服用降低胆固醇来预防心脏病和中风。
Monash大学的研究员 Ana Traven 副教授还获得120万澳元，这一笔拨款用于研究对抗致命的真菌感染（fungal infections）。
目前在全澳，由于缺乏适当的诊断和治疗选择，在重症监护病房中感染超级白色念珠菌（superbug Candida albicans）的病人，一周内死亡率高达 56%。

这是好事啊。
注重医学是澳洲的传统。
澳洲的医学在世界上还是一流的。
只是，有些州（如新州）排队等手术的病人太多了点，联邦政府是否也要拔款支援一下？或者是新州政府应该改变自己的花钱习惯和计划？體育场能不要花太多钱吗？排队等手术的人的心情州長知道吗？

They promoted this ridiculous research in the place I work. The aim of research is set for 70yo or above HEALTHY people to take statin as prospective research. But the research ruled out any old people with heart or lung disease. Basically their target population usu have NOT taken any other medications at all, apart from panadol.
I straightaway told them:
First of all, this is a purely wasting money research as the target group has a strong survivor bias that, even without any intervention, the healthy 70yo or above people will have much higher chance not to have chronic disease or live longer than other groups. So adding statin to prove its efficacy is non sense, sometimes it could put more harm to healthy old people because of its side effects
Secondly, they probably could not have enough sample size. Actually my clinic nurse did search for all patients above 70yr, only 8% of those people (>70) have not taken any medications.
All in all, this 5.8 million research just aims for minor group and may pose danger or harm to those people.
