A man has been shot dead in a ''deliberate, targeted'' attack carried out in broad daylight in Melbourne's outer north on Thursday morning.
Police said the victim, a 22-year-old man was approached by an unknown male offender in a laneway behind a Champions Parade residential address in Wollert shortly before 9am, during which an altercation took place.
Shots were fired after the fight in which the victim was killed, while another man fled the scene in a vehicle.
The shooting reportedly took place opposite the Korin Korin Child and Family Centre kindergarten.
"Despite the best efforts of emergency services to revive the 22-year-old man, he was declared deceased at the scene," Victoria Police wrote in a statement.
A burnt-out car has since been discovered on Amery St in Reservoir, with police now investigating whether the two incidents are linked.
Homicide squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said the victim was known to police and it was a brazen killing.
“It appears very deliberate and targeted,” he said.
“If anybody was in the Wollert area at around that time, if they saw anything suspicious or something that just didn’t look quite right … anyone that might have dashcam footage, if they can please come forward and share that information with us, because whilst I think it’s not relevant, it may very well be relevant."
It is understood the shooting may be linked to Melbourne's gangland scene.
The laneway where the shooting unfolded has since been cordoned off as a crime scene.
Inspector Thomas added the make and model of the torched-out car remained unclear on Thursday morning.
Anyone with information that could assist investigators has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
