Speech given to Mothers’ Club by Shelley She and Steven Parades (2012 HSC)

Good morning parents and teachers. Returning to James Ruse again and seeing so many familiar faces today is without a doubt nostalgic. However, more importantly we feel a great sense of responsibility in sharing the tips and advice that helped us exactly one year ago, when we were going through the testing time that is the HSC.

I think one of the most crucial pieces of advice we can give to Year 12 students is the need for consistent effort throughout the year. This could be in the form of keeping up to date with all your maths homework sheets to prevent more and more piling on top of each other, or putting in that extra effort to make notes for subjects like Chemistry throughout the year instead of cramming right before exams. This acts as good revision of topics covered in class and makes sure students are prepared when exams come around. As parents, you should be able to step in when obviously something like TV or gaming is really affecting your child’s time management. We really stress the need for good time management – for example using your diary or a calendar to record homework tasks and important dates - because this shows them that it’s up to them to be responsible and independent learners – skills that are essential for university and later life. Also, as parents and family, it’s important to know when your child’s next set of exams or assessments will be – noting this on a calendar and sticking it on the fridge for the whole family to see is a great way for the family to know when to be more quiet around the house so that your child can study peacefully with minimal distractions. So please ensure that your child is putting in consistent effort and managing their time efficiently and effectively as these are essential aspects of succeeding during Year 12.

There are many other ways parents can be there as support, which played a huge personal role in helping us achieve our goals. Our parents really helped to provide a sense of balance; in terms of making sure we were sleeping well and eating healthily. I know when I was crunching out those notes late at night my parents would make sure I had some fresh fruit to snack on to give me that boost of energy. My mum kept making sure that I had enough sleep every night – every night she constantly kept reminding me “Steven, it’s 12oclock at night, you should sleep now – you know that you need at least 8 hours of sleep.” So make sure you check on your children and ensure that they aren’t staying up late at night to do some study or cramming for exams since we know, learning from experience, that it’s really detrimental for concentration and motivation the next day. In terms of moral support though, we really stress the importance of recognizing the effort your child put into their work even if the results weren’t as good as they wanted. Although some pressure from parents is good, we believe that pressuring your child to do well in every subject may add to their already stressful lives – I think that the full support and positive encouragement we received from our parents really benefited us during our HSC year.
As for advice for students, we both stress that teachers are the most valuable resource available to you. Even if it’s just a few minutes staying behind after class to clarify anything that’s confusing you, ask about what was required in the next exam or getting extra help for your upcoming essay, teachers are such a great source of expertise, experience and support throughout our senior years. One more thing we can’t stress enough is the importance of working together during the HSC year. Throughout the year during free periods it’s important to find a group of friends that are both quiet so you can get work done, but who take similar subjects so you can ask each other questions and help each other if needed. This way students make the most of these free periods – which if Ms Connors had her way would be renamed study periods. I also remember before exams, social media sites like Twitter exploded as people asked and answered all sorts of science questions, uploaded photos of difficult maths problems, or even created public type-pads – online documents that can be edited by multiple people at the same time – to discuss possible essay questions and ways to tackle them. Further, it’s important that your children maintain a good balanced lifestyle and not just concentrate on study. I recall every Wednesday after school, my group of friends went to eat lunch together at Parramatta – I think we visited ALL of the restaurants at Parramatta by the end of year 12. So it’s good to encourage your children to do other activities with friends or even participate in extra-curricular activities at school as a break from study. Shelley was part of the Prefects and SRC in Year 12 and I was a Year 11 Mentor Leader and active leader of Amnesty. Having something else to focus on for a while and remaining passionate about other things – whether it be sport, school groups or even learning those dance moves recently displayed in the Valentine’s assembly – makes Year 12 all that more fun and acts as really good stress relief.

So we hope that our little talk was insightful and helpful for you as parents and for your children. Although Year 12 is a VERY stressful time, it is also an extremely enjoyable and rewarding year for your child. We’re confident that with your continual guidance and support, your child will excel this year and achieve their goals. We wish you all the very best for the year to come!
