网1月7日报道 援引新西兰英文先驱报的消息 今天上午在Carterton附近发生一起热气球坠毁事故，热气球上5对夫妇和一名飞行员死亡（共11人）。当地警方表示，警方在上午7:30左右接到当地居民报告后随即赶到出事地点。警方正会同消防，法医，运输事故调查委员会，民航管理局以及劳工处共同对该事故展开调查。
Wairarapa地区卫生局发言人Jill Stringer表示热气球上的乘员在事故中无一生还。
Radio Network的主持人Crissy Steele今早在Carterton称，热气球在飞行过程中起火。
Steele说，目前事故现场周围已拉起了警戒线。
Carterton居民David McKinlay在事故发生时正在花园里浇水。
“当它坠落时看起来大约有15米高的火焰，像一个反向的火箭以巨大的速度冲下来，”他说。
McKinlay先生看到后便进屋拨打111，但当他再出来时，他看到热气球已经几乎完全成了碎片。
McKinlay说，热气球砸在地上后，他可以看到一缕缕黑烟从残骸中升起。
距离热气球坠毁之处100米开外，有两名热气球上的乘客坠落在一个农场中，该农场主立刻对二人实施了紧急心脏复苏术，但回天乏术。
据悉，一名拨打急救电话的年轻女子焦急地向医务人员称：“爸爸妈妈在热气球上，他们撞到了电线，被打下来了。”
Carterton市长Ron Mark说，这是对于当地社区一个非常沉重的打击。
他说，Carterton的热气球爱好者很知名且规模不大，每个人都知道哪些人参与了这一活动。
Mark先生说，他的当务之急是为遇难者家属提供支持和并安排紧急服务人员。
他说，此事对一些消防队员来说必定是非常难过的，他们肯定认识遇难者中的一些人。
灾难受害者识别团队正在赶往现场，以帮助确定11名遇难者的身份。
