Only under certain circumstances will they allow battery powered units, some good info here from our friends at Brookes
Plus the OP is removing already hard wired units so that is what has to go back.
The Brookes are interchangeable as Colbunko mentioned but the first install must be done by an Electrician.
OP, 10 smoke alarms in a standard 4 bed house (if thats what you have) is a bit of overkill.
