I wouldn’t do it knowingly in a house.

Thankfully it's not going in a house and it's more an issue of function over form.

I put a 50mm door in a 40mm frame, I recessed the hinges into the door so the doors in the same place, as MaryMary said the latch moves out slightly but everything works just fine
went a 50 (or maybe it was 55mm) to get a high rated bit of double glazing to fit.
to make it nice I just re-did the architrave, so it extends the frame to the extra thickness of the door and it looks great ：）
