Defence Minister Richard Marles is calling for greater transparency from China's military after it conducted unprecedented live-fire drills in the Tasman Sea.

The Chinese Navy notified the Australian Defence Department shortly before commencing live fire exercises in February.

Mr Marles says the late notice was concerning and could have been done in a less disruptive way.
