Crime gang targets Eftpos users in shop scam

Police have urged Eftpos users to cover their hands when entering pin numbers and be on the lookout for pin-hole cameras in Melbourne stores as an international crime syndicate targets the city.
Fraud squad detectives have revealed shop workers are being offered upwards of $40,000 to let scammers tamper with their Eftpos machines, enabling them to steal the pin numbers and card details of shoppers.
Thousands of Melbourne Eftpos users have had millions of dollars stolen in the scam, which has links to the UK and Canada.
Detective Senior Sergeant Bill Nash, of the major fraud squad, told Radio 3AW today that if the machine had been professionally compromised so that the keypad captured the user's pin number, little could be done to prevent the fraud.
However in a more crude form of the scam, pin-hole cameras were installed in the roof of the building which could be visible to the naked eye.
He urged shoppers to keep a close eye on their bank accounts for any suspicious withdrawals, which sometimes took place interstate or even overseas.
"These machines are sometimes in place up to three weeks ... no one knows until these details end up on blank magnetic cards and withdrawals are made through an ATM, sometimes interstate or overseas," he said.
"You can also look above your head to see if there's a pin-hole camera looking at you. You can also cover [your hand] when putting in your pin."
He said as part of the scam, Melbourne workers in high-volume retail outlets, such as petrol stations, were approached and asked to "turn their back" while their Eftpos machine was whisked away and tampered with.
Those workers, who included international students, were paid upwards of $40,000 cash in exchange for turning a blind eye, he said.
Members of the crime syndicate, usually Sri Lankan nationals called "technicians", then flew to Australia from the UK or Canada and replaced the Eftpos machine with a dummy.
"It's then taken away to a location close by, where the electronics are fiddled with and within sometimes half an hour its returned," Detective Senior Sergeant Nash said.
"If the pin pad is not compromised, a camera is inserted in the ceiling to capture the actual pin of the customer.
"That's the rather crude way of doing it because someone later has to match the pin to the account.
"In some cases there was a pin pad underlay inserted in the Eftpos machine to electronically capture the pin."
Police arrested two men who were allegedly caught installing a camera in the roof of a service station in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. The camera was pointed towards the Eftpos machine, police said.
"We have monitored two fairly large operations to put surveillance in place and the exchange takes place and we're sitting outside with handcuffs," Detective Senior Sergeant Nash said.

他说在墨尔本许多客流量较大的零售店，比如加油站。诈骗犯会向店里的的员工支付高达四万元的“封口费”。这些员工中包括一些留学生。犯罪团伙中的成员被称作“技术员”，他们使用假的刷卡机盗取账户信息和密码，罪犯通常来自斯里兰卡，他们曾经在英国和加拿大作案。
Nash说“刷卡机被拿到商店的附近，然后在半小时内犯罪分子会拿着经过改装的机器返回商店。如果刷卡机没有被动过手脚的话，犯罪分子会在屋顶安装针孔摄像头盗取密码。这是一种相对低级的方式，因为犯罪分子必须用窃取到的密码和账户信息进行匹配。”
“某些情况下，犯罪分子会在刷卡机的键盘下插入电子设备盗取密码。”
目前警方已经抓获了两个犯罪嫌疑人，他们承认在墨尔本东区的一个公路服务站安装了摄像头盗取用户密码。“在我们查处的两起案件中，当犯罪犯罪分子安装了监控装置正在和店员进行非法交易的时候被我们当场抓获。“Nash警官说。
