Let's say, English language can be loosely divided into two categories:
- written / writing / formal;
- spoken / colloquial / informal
The former do require to follow grammar rules. So knowing grammar from your schooling will come in handy when time comes.
One of the problems with the traditional way of teaching a foreign language in the Chinese classroom is the lack of awareness in differences between formal writing and colloquial English. You can be content because you are fully aware of this.
How do we learn to speak English naturally? Here are some of the tips that might help:
- jot down (on mobiles, notepads, anything convenient) what you hear from the locals at workplace and social occasions
- learn common colloquial expressions from listening to local talkshow radios
- break down long sentences to short and keep it simple when you talk to someone
- say 'everyday words' instead of 'big words' e.g. say 'bear it in mind' in stead of 'remember' , say 'take off' in stead of 'depart from '
The better approach to speaking naturally is to learn everyday common expressions, and we have to learn these expressions particularly piece by piece, time consuming really!
If word-for-word translation worked right all the time, life would be a lot easier for us.

首先用词不够准确
其次是语气。语气表达的含义比词汇更丰富。
克服这2个问题,一切都不是问题了。
