The Commonwealth Bank has raised variable home loan interest rates by 0.15 percentage points, following the lead of Westpac last week in blaming tougher capital rules for the increase.
Its standard variable rate for owner-occupiers will rise to 5.6 per cent, and its standard rate for property investors will increase to 5.87 per cent.
Within minutes of CBA's move, the Australian dollar fell nearly half a cent to US71.83¢ as investors tipped the move would increase pressure on the Reserve Bank of Australia to ease monetary policy, as early as next month.
