Earning is also calculated on solar you consumed (free) at the rate that you would have paid the grid had you have to import from grid. For example if you self consumed 10kWh today from solar, if you don't have solar you would have to pay 10 x 20 cents per kWh (or whatever the retailer is charging you) = $2 profit by consuming solar.
