It's masked, monitored and sanitised, but life is returning to Sydney's university campuses
Life will return to Macquarie University's campus from Monday, as staff return to the office and almost two-thirds of students return to face-to-face learning.

As the spring semester begins, lectures will continue to be held online but many tutorials, seminars and small group activities will be held in person, and staff will be expected to head back to the office for part of the working week.
We expect around 60 per cent of students will elect to return to face-to-face learning activities on campus in Session 2," Vice Chancellor Bruce Dowton told students in a statement.

The University of Technology Sydney will also begin bringing students back from Monday, albeit in smaller numbers than Macquarie.

Shirley Alexander, Vice Chancellor (Education and Students), said the university would give priority to students whose courses require active learning, such as subjects requiring studios and laboratories. "Our best estimate is that less than 10 per cent will be on campus for those formal learning activities," she said.

Lecture theatres that once held 350 might now be limited to 50, students will have to register their attendance, and masks will be given to those who want them, especially in classes where keeping appropriate social distance is difficult.

The university will employ students - many of whom have lost their part-time hospitality jobs - to work as COVID monitors, and ensure social distancing is observed in its corridors. Students will have to register their attendance, and classes will be cut short so crowds do not gather and cleaning can take place.

In some subjects, academics have been able to choose whether to deliver content online only, or offer students a face-to-face option.

"There are some subjects where we know students really want to come back onto campus," Professor Alexander said. "They have been able to register for either an online or face to face tutorial, but we are keeping a close eye on that.

"People keep asking me for certainty, but I just don't know. If we get an outbreak next week, we'll go back online. If we go back to zero cases, we'll start reopening the campus again."

Nikola Balnave, from the Macquarie University chapter of the National Tertiary Education Union, said staff had mixed feeling about returning to campus, especially as the COVID outbreak in Victoria grows. "There's a high level of anxiety amongst a number of staff, depending on their own individual circumstances," she said.

"Academic staff are now being told that they need to do a certain proportion of teaching face to face on campus.

"My concern is that people's health and safety is being brought down to who their manager is, some are approaching it a humane and compassionate way, and understanding the concern of staff, and others are taking a black and white approach."

Sam Silcock, president of the students' association at UTS, said students were demanding the campus close when COVID cases first proliferated in March. But then they found the online learning experience was "vastly inferior" to in-person learning.

"It was no fault of the university, they just missed having that ability to engage with conversation, and a base level of social interaction to develop ideas," he said.

"I think things might be even worse than when we initially closed, in terms of how many new [COVID] cases, but people still seem quite eager to get out of an online space, especially for those subjects that require physical learning."

Sydney University has delayed the beginning of second semester by three weeks until August 24. Most lectures will remain online, but seminars, tutorials, workshops and small group projects will return to face-to-face teaching.

"We'll continue in a mixed-mode delivery, to cater for both our student community in Australia and abroad," a spokeswoman said. Staff will begin returning under a rostering system from July 27, which is likely to involve two to three days on campus each.

The University of NSW has temporarily paused approval of new applications to return to campus while the COVID-19 situation changes in NSW, and students and staff must not be on campus without approval and training.
