澳大利亚联邦科学与工业研究组织（CSIRO）总裁马歇尔（ Larry Marshall ）博士在堪培拉的记者俱乐部说他对澳洲科学家能研发出新冠疫苗“乐观”。
马歇尔是在回应关于俄国声称研发了疫苗的问题时说这番话的。国际卫生机构说俄国的疫苗还没有完成关键的后期临床试验确定其安全和有效性。
他拒绝回应是否会“排队去打一针”俄国疫苗的问题，而是侧重于澳洲自己的努力，CSIRO视野中一共有200多支候选疫苗。
“80%的疫苗会失败，我们侧重于可以生效的疫苗。”
“由于全澳的通力合作，我们研发了最快之一进行动物实验的疫苗，并且已经在英美进入了人体试验阶段。”
“我们得关注那些，如果有结果的话我们就有解决办法了。"
“看了200支候选疫苗后，我大概会相信在澳大利亚疾病预防中心 （ACDP)的人来告诉我选哪只打，我可能更会担心社会上比我早打疫苗的弱势人群。”
马歇尔不愿披露澳洲疫苗的进展，他说澳洲的方式是“闭上嘴好好干”而不是到处宣传。
“你可以研发出来了再发推，让人们得到疫苗；也可以现在就吹嘘，希望自己以后能兑现。”
“我认为澳洲的方式是闭嘴低头干，那么你成功后就可以上屋顶向全世界宣布了。”
“我保持乐观。”

CSIRO chief executive Dr Larry Marshall has told the National Press Club in Canberra he is "optimistic" Australian scientists will succeed in the hunt for a COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr Marshall was responding to questions about Russia's claim to have produced a vaccine for the coronavirus, even though global health authorities say the vaccine has yet to complete critical, late-stage clinical trials to determine its safety and effectiveness.
He declined to respond directly when asked whether he'd "line up and take a jab" of the Russian vaccine, instead focusing on Australia's own efforts, with more than 200 vaccine candidates in the CSIRO's sights.
"Eighty per cent of vaccines fall over before they get to save lives. We're focused on finding the vaccines that can deliver," Dr Marshall said.
"Because of the collaboration that happened across Australia we were able to develop one of the fastest animals trials to get the vaccines and that went into human trials in the UK and US.
"We need to watch those. If those can deliver those can have a solution.
"Having looked at 200 vaccines, I probably trust our people in ACDP [Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness] to tell me what jab to take and I probably more worry about the vulnerable people in society having the jab before I did."
While Dr Marshall wouldn't reveal what progress had been made on a vaccine in Australia, he said the Australian way was "just shut up and do it" rather than publicise it.
"You can keep your powder dry, and get it done. And tweet about it once you've done it and people are getting vaccines or you can blow your trumpet now and hope you can deliver later," he said.
"I think the Australian way is just shut up and do it and, you know, you can shout about from it the rooftops once you've succeeded.
"I'm optimistic."
