Why a fish worth $1 MILLION could be released in Sydney Harbour

A tagged fish with a cash bounty of $1 million could soon be released into Sydney waters in a bid to lure crowds to the city’s Western Harbour.

The fish hunt is just one part of a proposed Harbour of Life festival organised by Western Harbour Alliance to rebrand the area - that spans from Barangaroo to the west of Pyrmont - as a “signature Sydney destination”.

Western Harbour Alliance chairman Geoff Parmenter told 7NEWS.com.au that the proposal centred around key themes including seafood, sustainability and creativity.

Under the plan, a kingfish would be released with a million-dollar tag into the Western Harbour to bring in anglers hoping to hook a fortune.

It’s an idea Parmenter said he couldn’t take credit for, with similar promotions in the Northern Territory and Victoria’s fire-ravaged regions earlier this year.

He said the proposal also hadn’t ruled out releasing several other fish tagged with smaller prizes.

The 10-day event would also include sculptural installations in the sea and further art installations along the Harbour Walk, as well as a celebration of seafood.

The alliance, which has worked to optimise the precinct for several years, includes major businesses and landholders around the harbourfront including Lendlease, Mirvac, and the Sydney Fish Market.

The ability to stand up the proposal is dependent on the state’s 2020-21 Budget, due on Tuesday.
