A 31-year-old mother has been named as she faced court after allegedly murdering her baby boy in a home in Perth's northern suburbs.

Jacinta Beth Sells, 31, was charged with murdering her seven-month-old baby boy on Monday morning.

Police allege it was a domestic violence homicide.

Emergency services were called to a home in the Perth suburb of Balcatta, at about 3.10am following reports a child had been seriously injured.

The infant was found with suspected stab wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

Sells appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday and wiped away tears as the charge was being read out to her by Magistrate Sandra De Maio.

Western Australia Police Commissioner Col Blanch said police will allege the death is a family violence incident.

“There was a male, a female and a young person,” he said.

“This is a trauma that no one will ever recover from, the family are deeply affected.”

Commissioner Blanch said first responders were shocked by what they discovered when they arrived on the scene.

“There would be very few cases where you would have a crime scene of such a horrific nature for our officers and for first responders involved,” he said.

“It’s something that will most likely haunt them for the rest of their careers.”

WA Premier Roger Cook told reporters on Tuesday morning his heart went out to first responders and everyone involved in such a “dreadful” incident.

"Our hearts go out to everyone involved in that," he said.

"Obviously, there's family and friends who are impacted by the information that's coming through."

Sells did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.

She is scheduled to appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court in August.
