If you are unsure read Are you an Australian resident?.
Residents are entitled to a tax-free threshold (currently $6,000 per year). Non-residents are not entitled to a threshold. Where a person changes their residency during the year they are entitled to a pro-rated threshold (currently $500 for each part or full month of residency). If your residency changed, you must tell e-tax whether you were in receipt of certain Australian Government pensions or allowances as you may be excluded from the pro-rating based on change of residency.
