For those who claimed dependent relative offset (parents), did ATO investigate all of your claims/deductions or just your claim against dependent relative offset? My mother in law has PR and completed her tax return for 2011-12.

Randomly? So it doesn't matter whether I claim dependent relative tax offset or not? Or by claiming that offset it will increase my choice of getting picked for random test?

This check is all computerised, it is not old days manual random check any more. If the data is in system, it will be checked and flagged when there is an inconsistency.
The only question to ATO is whether it is material enough to pursue the inconsistency. Sometimes they might have a better way to spend their time and resources.
To you, the question is whether it is worth of risking it.

ta, I got all the relevant supporting doc ready for parent's offset, but really don't have that much time to mess around with ATO if they want to investigate this and that.
