Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its successor to the ML-Class SUV ahead of its local arrival in September.
Now named GLE in line with the manufacturer's new branding strategy, the revised car offers new styling alongside upgraded drivelines with improved fuel economy.
New headlights, taillights and bumpers bring the wagon's looks in line with other models in the brand's family
Technical upgrades include a new nine-speed automatic transmission and new Dynamic Select system that adjusts suspension and driveline settings for comfort, sport, off-road or slippery driving.
Premium models can be optioned with a new active curve system that uses active roll bars to compensate for body roll during cornering, and well-heeled holidaymakers benefit from a new power retractable trailer coupling capable of towing up to 3500 kilograms.
The GLE is also available with active safety features including autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance features that help avoid accidents.
Mercedes-Benz is set to offer the GLE with a choice of seven engines that, on average, use 17 per cent less fuel compared to the previous model.
The entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder GLE 250d uses 5.4L/100km of diesel to produce 150kW, while 3.0-litre V6-powered GLE 350d uses 6.4L/100km to produce 190kW and 620Nm.
Petrol choices include the GLE 400 twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 that uses 8.8L/100km to make 245kW and 480Nm, while the 4.7-litre GLE 500 offers a twin-turbo V8 that produces 320kW and 700Nm.
A hybrid GLE 500e model offers a combined output of 325kW and 650Nm thanks to a 245kW petrol V6 and 85kW hybrid motor that pair up to produce a fuel figure of just 3.3L/100km.
Flagship GLE 63 and GLE 63 S AMG models make 410kW and 430kW respectively, along with 700Nm and 760Nm torque outputs. The top-line GLE63 S can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds, making it a match for BMW's similarly muscular X5M SUV.
A "completely revised" chassis and reworked AMG-specific seven-speed automatic transmission promise stirring dynamics. The five-door GLE will join a swoopy new GLE coupe set to rival BMW's divisive X6 SUV.
Mercedes-Benz Australia will confirm local models and pricing closer to the GLE's launch in September.
